Dance & theatre photography

"While I dance I cannot judge, I cannot hate, I cannot separate myself from life. I can only be joyful and whole. This is why I dance.” - Hans Bos.

This quote sums up why I love photographing dancers. I am in awe of what dancers can do with their bodies, their discipline, hard work, and guts to dance in front of others. Being vulnerable, yet so strong. Dance has always been such a powerful medium to express joy, and sadness and is even used as social commentary on serious issues.

As a young press photographer, I had the opportunity to photograph a lot of ballet performances and art festivals. Basically any dance and theatre/stage performances. That is where my love for dance and theatre photography was born. I have always been in awe of our talent in this country and our diversity and the different styles of dance.

With dance photography, I can tap into the dancer's energy and try to capture their talent through my art. Freezing beautiful moments in time. I enjoy the challenge of dance photography because you need to listen to the music and know when to take the picture. You need to capture the dancer at the perfect moment, otherwise, your photo can do more harm than good.

Although I don't always know the names of the "moves" or "positions" I have learned through the years to listen to the music and also when to press the shutter. Sometimes it is just luck because a split second can make all the difference between an amazing image and one not even worth editing, but that feeling of capturing that perfect shot/ jump and the dancer's emotion is incredible.

Through my one-on-one dance portraits and dance and theatre photography, I hope to help promote the arts and amazing artists we have in this country.
